Training Cost Estimates

Cessna 150s are the cheapest option for training, and all single-engine checkrides except IFR can be completed in one. The FAA requires 40 hours for Private, 40 for Instrument, and 250 for Commercial. We recommend splitting time between aircraft for commercial time-building to make flying even cheaper.

Good to Know

Before You Budget

  • Not included: fuel surcharge, checkride fees, aviation gear or study materials, and FTSP instruction.
  • Fuel surcharge: as of April 2026, a 5% surcharge is added to each hour of flight time. It will be removed once fuel costs drop below $5/gallon.
  • FTSP instruction: not included in these estimates. FTSP instruction is $60/hr instead of $50/hr, due to the added paperwork required during training.
