About the Certificate

The Top of the Pilot Certificate Ladder

The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate is the highest level of pilot certification and is required to act as captain for a U.S. airline. Training focuses on the advanced knowledge, multi-engine proficiency, and decision-making expected of airline-level pilots.

  • Multi-engine proficiency: the ATP practical test is flown in a multi-engine airplane.
  • Advanced knowledge: aerodynamics, high-altitude weather, regulations, and aircraft systems.
  • Airline-level standards: precision, crew resource management, and professional judgment.
  • Time building: work toward the flight experience the FAA requires.
1,500 HoursFAA total flight time required for the ATP certificate, with certain exceptions for approved programs.

23 Years OldThe minimum age for the ATP certificate.

Requirements to Begin

The FAA sets the experience and testing requirements for the ATP. Here are the basics.

  • Age: at least 23 years old.
  • Certificates: a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating, and a multi-engine rating.
  • Experience: 1,500 hours total flight time, including required cross-country, night, instrument, and pilot-in-command time.
  • Training: the FAA’s ATP Certification Training Program (ATP CTP) before the knowledge test.
  • Medical: a current FAA medical certificate. A first-class medical is required to exercise airline privileges.
  • Tests: pass the ATP knowledge test, then an oral exam and flight test.

ATP FAQs

Quick answers to common questions.

How many hours do I need for an ATP?

The FAA generally requires 1,500 hours of total flight time. Some approved programs and military experience qualify for a restricted ATP with fewer hours. Contact us and we will help you understand which path fits you.

What is the ATP CTP?

The ATP Certification Training Program is an FAA-required course you complete before taking the ATP knowledge test. It combines classroom instruction with simulator training.

Do I need a multi-engine rating?

Yes. The ATP practical test is taken in a multi-engine airplane, so you will need a multi-engine rating and experience in a twin.

Can I train for the ATP in your Apache?

Our Piper Apache is our twin-engine training airplane. Contact us to confirm availability and what the examiner requires for the ATP practical test.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We partner with Stratus Financial. Contact us and we will walk you through your options.
